You keep ending up in relationships that leave you anxious, hurt, and depleted. You ignore your intuition, explain away red flags, and struggle to trust your own judgment. Therapy can help you break free from cycles of chaos and instability by reconnecting you with the part of yourself that has always known what you deserve and who you truly are. I specialize in helping women heal the deeper patterns beneath chaotic relationships, codependency, people-pleasing, and chronic self-doubt. Together, we'll explore how childhood experiences, attachment wounds, and survival strategies shaped the ways you learned to seek love, safety, and belonging. If you've found yourself outsourcing your authority and ignoring your own discernment, therapy can help you reconnect with the wisdom that has always existed within you. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing®, attachment theory, and Jungian depth psychology, we'll teach your nervous system that love no longer has to come at the cost of yourself. My practice is especially affirming for women who are deeply intuitive, spiritually curious, or drawn to earth-based and nontraditional spiritual practices. I believe healing isn't about becoming someone new—it's about remembering who you were before fear, shame, and survival taught you to distrust yourself. Through a feminist, LGBTQ+ affirming, anti-racist, and sex-positive lens, I help women reconnect with their inner wisdom, build relationships rooted in mutual respect rather than pain and intensity, and create lives that feel aligned with their values instead of their wounds. I offer virtual therapy throughout Illinois and Minnesota.

A lot of the students I work with look like they’re holding it together, but inside they feel overwhelmed. You might be lying in bed with your mind racing, replaying conversations, worrying about grades, or second guessing where you stand with friends, a roommate, or a partner. College transitions can make everything feel louder, with new expectations, new relationships, and sometimes pressure from back home. In therapy, we’ll slow things down, figure out what’s fueling the stress, and build tools you can use right away so you feel more grounded, more confident in your choices, and more like yourself.

Do you identify as gender diverse (transgender, non-binary, gender queer, etc)? Are currently questioning or discovering your gender and/or needing a referral letter for medical transition steps? Jack Garner, LCSW is a licensed clinical therapist in the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Illinois and is a member of WPATH. Their practice is offered online where they provide individual counseling and coaching as well as referral letters for medical transition steps, such as HRT and surgeries (Note, all WPATH referral letters are provided under the informed consent model - meaning NO gate-keeping practices and it takes just one session to obtain your letter). I identify as gender diverse (AFAB, Non-Binary, Transmasc), which allows me to have a unique understanding, both personal and professional, that is not often found in the therapy world. I am passionate about serving our community and understand what it is like to question your gender, experience dysphoria, and take medical transition steps. If you are looking for a therapist who truly understands you and has 'been there' themselves - I am here for you! I look forward to meeting you and will absolutely consider it my honor to assist you in discovering and/or furthering your path to authenticity, wholeness, and joy. At Carlson Counseling Connection, we work best with undergraduate and graduate students who are trying to navigate the intense pressure, independence, and constant transitions of university life. Many of the students who thrive in therapy with me look like they are managing everything just fine on the outside—staying on top of classes, keeping up social lives, or building impressive resumes—even when they are feeling burnt out, anxious, or uncertain on the inside. You might be a great fit for my practice if you are experiencing: Academic & Future Anxiety: You feel an overwhelming pressure to perform, maintain high grades, or figure out your career path, leading to frequent overthinking, perfectionism, or fear of failure. Major Life Transitions: You are adjusting to life on campus, moving away from home, managing increased independence, or preparing to transition out of university into the workforce. Burnout & Emotional Fatigue: You find it difficult to rest without feeling guilty, often feeling mentally drained, overextended by commitments, or running on empty. Boundary & Identity Stress: You are navigating shifting family dynamics, roommate conflicts, complex friendships, or learning how to stand up for your own needs without feeling like you're letting others down. Therapy can be a candid, low-pressure space where you don't have to keep up appearances or put on a brave face. Together, we'll cut through the noise, build practical ways to handle stress, and help you create a balanced university experience that actually feels sustainable.

Like many therapist profiles, this page could list my degrees and credentials, provide a vague description of what clients I work with, and be distant but warm; however, that is not how I work with clients or how I am in the world. I want this page to help you decide if we’ll work well together, not just list the things I’ve done. What you probably want to know is 1) do I know what I’m doing and 2) are we a good fit in working together. I have been working in the mental health field, specifically with eating disorders, since 2014 in a variety of capacities including inpatient, residential, and crisis stabilization programs. I am passionate about eating disorder recovery and collaborating with patients to find balance in their lives. I am body-positive and Health at Every Size (HAES) aligned. I have experience in working with families, couples, and individuals in addition to facilitating group therapy. My primary focus lies in helping to support clients and their loved ones in understanding and moving forward in the path to recovery through individual and family therapy. I have earned the distinction of being a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) by the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and have been an officeholder for the Heartland chapter of iaedp since 2019 and remained committed to pursuing ongoing education within the field. There are so many people who hesitate to come to therapy or to move forward in eating disorder recovery due to having been previously unsuccessful with a “one size fits all” approach. I work with you to figure it out. I’m not a smile-and-nod, sit in silence type of therapist. I'll call you out on your BS, but I can do that in a way where we can both laugh. I'm not afraid to talk about anything you need to talk about. Intrusive thoughts? Feeling like you’re the only person to feel this way? You’d be surprised to find that you’re not alone. Therapy will provide a safe space to be yourself and a supportive environment to help meet you where you’re at and work towards creating lasting change in your life.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to make sense of who you are, where you’re going, and how to handle life’s challenges. I work with students who feel like their emotions are out of control, are struggling with identity, navigating family stress, searching for community, or carrying the impact of past experiences. I understand how culture, family, and community shape our stories. Sometimes in ways that bring strength, and other times through cycles we want to break. I believe therapy is a collaborative process. Together, we’ll build coping tools, create balance, and honor your culture, story, and strengths as you move toward a life that feels more meaningful and manageable.

I work with students and young adults who are struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, and dealing with the undergoing changes of going to college or starting full time work. I offer therapy without judgment, I am here to help you challenge the critic in your mind telling you that you're doing everything wrong and that everyone is judging you all the time. I use a mix of cognitive and behavioral approaches to help you learn ways to change how you think about yourself and the world around you. I help by providing a nonjudgmental space and time for you to process through the thoughts that are troubling you and the worries you have. I am available to see clients in Illinois and Indiana.

Life’s challenges can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from ourselves and others. I strive to create a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. I work with emerging adults and adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, body image issues, grief, trauma, and questions related to identity, culture, and belonging. I have a particular interest in supporting women, individuals navigating multicultural or first-generation experiences, and those recovering from sexual trauma, intimate partner violence, and unhealthy patterns. I draw from psychodynamic therapy, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based approaches. As a first-generation American with a multicultural background, I understand that culture, family dynamics, and identity can play a significant role in how we experience ourselves, our relationships, and the challenges we face. My goal is to help clients develop greater self-understanding while creating meaningful and lasting change.

The students and young adults I work best with are often navigating major life shifts - whether adjusting to college life, entering demanding graduate programs, or preparing to transition into the workforce. Many of my clients are high-achievers who find themselves struggling with constant anxiety, perfectionism, or feeling overwhelmed by high-pressure academic or social environments. Others are navigating relational dynamics - dealing with communication roadblocks, trust issues, or changes in how they relate to partners, family, or friends. My clients typically look for therapy that goes beyond surface-level advice - a place where they can feel heard, gain practical tools, and better understand themselves as they figure out the next steps.

Hello. I'm Dr. LaShara Shaw. I believe that we have basic needs. We have needs for personal power, freedom, fun, survival, and secure connections (a choice-theory perspective). Sometimes these needs are not met or we have difficulty attending to them. I think it is crucial to reflect upon what matters in your life and what you consider your responsibility to achieve a flourishing life. Sometimes thoughts, insecurities, and behaviors can be taught, and they do not serve us in the best capacity. In those instances, I believe that humans are capable of learning new things. There is power and brevity in recognizing choices, and there is autonomy to choose how to engage with those circumstances through the collaborative process. Feel free to see my Psychology Today profile, https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/lashara-shaw-naperville-il/845893.
